It seems Troutgirl just got fired from her job at Friendster for blogging. People in the blogosphere are pissed. The aftermath has caused today to be declared the official Cancel Your Friendster Account Day.

More Here.

Of, course, I don't really plan on doing anything, I enjoy my crazy friendster messages and it's sort of retro to have an account now.

I have always wondered why the hell anyone would want to go to Oxford, MS to go to college. It's a very popular choice in the mid-south, one that always seemed inexplicable to me. I think the answer may have finally been revealed. Did you know that The University of Mississippi runs the only legal pot farm in the United States?

The federal government has been spending $250,000 a year since 1976 to grow 7 acres worth of doobage to supply eight (8) people with 300 joints each per month or 3,600 joints per year. Some of these eight have multiple sclerosis, some have glaucoma, some have other, rarer neurological or congenital ailments and smoking marijuana eases or lessens pain or muscular spasms. (Yet, the government claims there is no medical use for marijuana -- so it is placed on Schedule I of the DEA substance control.] -- from the Sacramento Bee, Nov. 5, 1995

Now, I know that the reefer is surrounded by 12-foot barbed-wire fences, motion detectors, and 3 whitewashed towers manned by armed guards, but that's way more weed than 8 people could possibly inhale, so if they happen to burn it off, just being downwind of the farm could possibly make Oxford bearable. Maybe.

USA Today asked Michael Moore to write an editorial after sitting in on the speeches at the RNC yesterday. Sen. John McCain called the crowd's attention to Moore, calling him a "disingenuous filmmaker" and encouraging delegates to chant "four more years" in his general direction (Moore responded with "two more months" and later thanked McCain for alluding to his movie, "Fahrenheit 9/11," and possibly boosting its box office).

Here's an excerpt from his article:

I asked one man who told me he was a "proud Republican," "Do you think we need strong laws to protect our air and water?"

"Well, sure," he said. "Who doesn't?"

I asked whether women should have equal rights, including the same pay as men.

"Absolutely," he replied.

"Would you discriminate against someone because he or she is gay?"

"Um, no." The pause — I get that a lot when I ask this question — is usually because the average good-hearted person instantly thinks about a gay family member or friend.

I've often found that if I go down the list of "liberal" issues with people who say they're Republican, they are quite liberal and not in sync with the Republicans who run the country. Most don't want America to be the world's police officer and prefer peace to war. They applaud civil rights, believe all Americans should have health insurance and think assault weapons should be banned. Though they may personally oppose abortion, they usually don't think the government has the right to tell a women what to do with her body.

There's a name for these Republicans: RINOs or Republican In Name Only. They possess a liberal, open mind and don't believe in creating a worse life for anyone else.

The GOP Doesn't Reflect America.

So this guy sends me a message through Friendster that says:

I was just browsing Friendster for people in my area that share some my interests and wanted to say hello. I live in Olive Branch and looking for friendship. I'm known to have a strange sense of humor, but am a really good listener and easy to get to know. Send me a message sometime.

Well, that's a sale that has me salivating. Anyway, I've met a couple of people off friendster. It's a valid way to meet new people. No biggie. When it works the way it's supposed to, you get introduced to friends of your friends and you make a new friend. Cool deal. Some are even cute. Better deal. But this guy has no friends, and no testimonials, and no "about me", and no pictures. But it does say that he's MARRIED! Does he understand how friendster works? It's not Match.com!

The thing is, I could probably get past all of that except he's from The O.B. and you know we ain't having that.

What's the O.B. you ask? The exact opposite of The O.C.

Word on the street is that Usher will be doing an aftershow at Plush following his inaugural concert at the FedEx Forum September 17th. Yeah!

I won't be there, I've gotten more than I can take of his egomania this summer. I'm tired of him confessing about his chick on the side and showing his abs. I wouldn't want to get too close to him anyway, I could be injured when his head finally explodes. Take that and rewind it back.

My weekend was pretty uneventful. I read 2 books, watched 3 movies, went to 4 bars, stopped by the Lucero show for 5 minutes (way too hot and we couldn't get a drink), slept a lot, and ended up at a party til the wee hours of the morning. Oh, and of course I watched the VMA's, which is way old news by now so I won't even go into it. Except, shouldn't it be called the MVA's? Anyway, the good news is that I still have SFU and Entourage to look forward to watching tonight. YAY!

I will say the best line of the VMA's was when Dave Chappelle looked at the crowd and asked, "What won't you agree with?" Classic.

Oh, and Brad and Sean have a new Arts, Music and Events forum at GarageMemphis.com. Go check it out.

After hanging out at Jaydred's with him and Mark most of the evening, we decided to go out for a little while last night. As it was already after midnight when we hit the town, there were not many options so we ended up at this really cheesey club whose name I won't mention. It's always fascinating to me to watch the inner workings of male and female relationships in a club setting just before last call. There are always girls on the floor getting there dance on, trying to act sexy, doing it poorly - and guys with their tongues halfway hanging out of their mouths giving them the "I'm gonna tear that ass up" look. Then the guys go up to the girls and try to talk to them and the girls totally blow them off and walk away, leaving them looking stupid in the middle of the dance floor. It's a dance in itself.

I ended up thinking myself into a weird conundrum. I was sitting there thinking about how I could never be into a guy that might come to this particular bar. But then again, I was there. So, what did that say about me? My rationalization was that I was there for laughs and the absurdity of it all. But I guess other people, including guys, could have ended up there for the same reason. Then I came to the conclusion that it really didn't matter, any guy that I would be into would be way too cool to talk to me anyway.

The best part of the night came after we almost witnessed a sloppy drunk testosteroned fueled slapfest and we decided that we had had enough and it was time to go. We got up from our table and headed for the door when this pimp lookin dude stopped me and asked if my companions and I were in a band. When we got outside I told the boys and Jason's response was, "That's just how we roll."

Actually, after seeing my car this morning, I must have gotten some action last night afterall.

OMG, I am so just kidding - you guys are filthy!

My friends don't get my obsession with Ryan Adams. Well, it's hard to explain, but he's mean, funny, a smartass, a big nerd, self-absorbed, narcissistic, quirky, likes to drink, likes to bullshit, is obsessed by music, tells a good story, thinks too much, can't settle into a genre, loves and hates NYC, is crass, says things without thinking about them, and basically just doesn't care what anyone else thinks and could change his mind at any moment. We're soul mates.

If you're not music obsessed, this won't interest you, but you can listen to him talk about his latest album here.

Good News - I bought some really cool CD's yesterday and I got tickets to see The Killers in Nashville today.

Bad News - At this rate I'll be broke in exactly 72 hours.

Steps In Overcoming Masturbation

My favorite?

When the temptation to masturbate is strong, yell STOP to those thoughts as loudly as you can in your mind and then recite a prechosen Scripture or sing an inspirational hymn. It is important to turn your thoughts away from the selfish need to indulge.

Now you know why I'm always humming.

Saturday night was a crazy one. I had a date. That's the crazy part. We went to McEwen's which was really great. Mashed sweet potatoes, hmmmmmmmmm.

After dinner I parted ways with my dinner companion and went to an awesome party at Craig Brewer's. He has an rocking back yard and the open bar was the highlight of my night. I was hanging out with this guy named Joe, he's an actor and he was telling me about how he just finished filming a movie about the life of Tupac Shakur. Then he starts going into this whole thing about how Tupac is still alive, living in Cuba running a production company and how he and Snoop Dogg talk to him all the time. He tells me how Tupac is just waiting on the statute of limitations to run out on his death before he comes back to the states.

I was kind of at a loss for words. First of all, I really don't care if Tupac is still alive or not. Second of all, why is this guy telling me all this stuff? It was a really weird experience that ended with me going to get another drink at the bar.

Anyway, I headed over to Swig at 11 PM to hear Odie and Mr White spin. When I arrived there was a line outside. Really? At SWIG? Alright. I had to sneak up to the front and do a little fast talking in order not to have to wait in line. It was weird for Memphis. But once inside, it was a great time. I even talked Ellen into bringing her new beau down and kickin it with Brandon, Michelle, Daniel, Stevan, Beth and Me. There were a ton of people there and everyone seemed to be having a great time. They even moved the tables and chairs out of the way to make a faux dance floor.

After Swig I met Ellen and Tom at Raiford's. Since Ellen is leaving to go back to NYC this week, I told her that no Memphis visit would be complete without experiencing the circus known as Raiford's. Just being able to tell her cosmopolitan Manhattanite friends that she swigged beer from a 40 while listening to "Pussy Control" by Prince sitting on a white leather sofa across from a bunch of drunk frat boys, well, that's worth the price of admission. (but you should try the duck and walk-by before you dole out your 10 bucks).

After having some guy try to stick his tongue down my throat, I hit the dancefloor with Trevor and got my ass shake on. By 3 AM I thought it was time to go home, but I had one last stop to make at the 2 Way Inn to meet up with Mark and hear about his evening. It seems everyone was out Saturday night whooping it up. It was a good one. Only topped by our Sunday night shenanigans, but that's another story.

coolcrew.jpgWell, as many of you guys know, I've been on a little party bender since last week. Since I didn't get to go out much over the summer, as soon as I had the chance I started making up for it. Friday night a bunch of us from the film I worked on this summer got together to say good-bye to Sueann who is headed back to Miami. I don't think that she'll miss Memphis much, she didn't really give it much of a chance, but few people do.

I think I pissed her off early in the evening. She was taking some pictures with my camera and the preview was on. Instead of trying the buttons on the top of the camera in order to turn it off, she started shaking my camera like an Etch-A-Sketch. I muttered that I thought she would know how to use a camera since she is Asian. I was just kidding! She got her revenge when we all said good-bye for the evening and she said, "I'm gonna miss you Memphis Hillbillies!"

My response was, "See? It's fun to insult people isn't it?"

Last night I hit Swig with the dj posse to listen to some tunes from JetSet and collaborate on how to take over the universe. When things died down at Swig we took a ride around downtown to weigh our options. We ended up at Atlas which was kind of a cheesefest, but we ended up getting a choice booth and running into some friends, so it was a pretty good time. It wasn't until later in the evening I was informed by Jaydread that the older gentlemen that were hanging around our table all night talking to us were The Psychedelic Furs. They had played earlier at The New Daisy.

I was in the Marriott hotel bar last week and ran into Brad from The Dempsey's who was hanging out with the bassist from The Stray Cats. I think they were playing somewhere in town, but I forgot where. Anyway, since all great things come in three's, I wonder which '80's icon I'll run into next. I'm crossing my fingers that it's Nancy Wilson of Heart, since they're playing in Tunica this weekend!

I know a lot of people have come here looking for the pictures from the Studio 54 Party at Melange last weekend. Sorry, it took me so long to get them up, but I'm busy - ya know!

The party was a huge success and everyone I talked to had a great time. From the disco ball, the red carpet, the velvet rope, and the balloon release, they had the Studio vibe blazin'. The music was hot, the bodies up in the place were hotter and I can't wait to do it again! I know the boys are cookin' up something for another party, I'll put out some details as soon as I get the go-ahead.

So anway, you can find the pictures here. I was diggin' my eighties style get-up, but I'm rethinking the blown out hair and inch thick make-up.

A bunch of us Memphis blogger folks got together last night at The Barbeque Shop in anticipation of Tim Blair's arrival in Memphis. He's on a cross country road trip on his way to the Republican National Convention. Well, I guess Mr. Blair got held up in traffic because he never made it to his reception. After a couple of fun-filled hours discussing ketchup and Furries, I had to move on to my next destination and leave my fine friends from bloggerville. I was pleasantly surprised to recieve this email from Mike of half-bakered fame today.

Hi Rachel,

I got an email this morning from Tim, who hates that he missed us. He
also said this:

>> Again, apologies, and I am also royally pissed at
>> myself for missing Rachel!

How 'bout that! :-)

Well, Mr. Blair, you should be relieved, I would have gotten you into all sorts of trouble!

Alright people, I am officially back in the game. What a summer, what a heartwrenching, drama-filled, exhausting, heat filled summer! But it's all behind me now. And I'm not even gonna go into all the gory details, cause I like to focus on the positive, yo. All that matters is that I'm back, baby.

If I haven't answered your email or wrote about the wild and wacky night when we got drunk together, it's not that it doesn't mean anything to me or that you don't hold a very special place in my heart, it's just that I'm lazy and have filled all my spare time with sleep instead of blogging. But now that I don't have to work until eleven o'clock every night, there will not only be more time for wild and wacky nights, but I'll have more time to mortify my friends by writing about them.

So, to get the ball rolling, here's one of the things I did this summer that is worth going back and revisiting.

Cure1.jpgKrista, Gail, Michael and I took a road trip to Nashville for an awesome day of sun, shopping and The Curiosa Festival. We went to Opryland Mills, this massive conglomerate of stores with more theme restaurants than you can shake a stick at. We had lunch at Aquarium and ate amongst the sharks, eels and stingrays. The restaurant was amazing and I have great pics. The entire mall was really cool and I bought a really cool messenger bag and some killer sneaks. We experienced "shoppertainment " at it's finest.
Cure2.jpgAfter our stellar shopping experience we headed south to Starwood to see the show. The muscle at the front gate tried to keep me from bringing my bag into the show. I had already left my camera in the car so that I wouldn't have any problems. After a little bit of bitching (not mine) they changed their minds and allowed me into the show. Score one for me! Of course, after entering the gates I realized that they were allowing disposable camera and ones without a zoom. Luckily, Gail and Michael both have camera phones. Score number two!
Cure3.jpgWe got to the show too late to catch Auf Der maur, which everyone seems to be totally flipping out about. I listened to some songs on the website and nothing really caught my attention. We did get to see The Rapture, Interpol, and Thursday. The second stage setup sucked, you couldn't take alcoholic beverages where it was set up, which kept slowing us up every time we walked over to check it out, and it was such a small area, we were all crammed in and it was really hard to see the stage.

Cure4.jpgMy favorite part of the night came when we were standing in the walkway to the second stage and after a few double jack & cokes I decided that there were a lot of make-out worthy hipster boys at the show. Gail and Krista vowed to help me find one to fulfill my fantasy, but they kept picking out ones for me that just weren't exactly right. They kept asking me to point a guy out so they would know exactly who I was lusting after. After taking a look around the crowd I saw this one guy walk towards us that fit the bill perfectly, I pointed to him and said, "that guy!"

As he got a little closer I realized it was Luke Jenner from The Rapture. Well, of course, I would want to make out with him! As he passed us to go check out Thursday playing on the second stage, Krista asked if I really wanted him and as I said, "Hell yeah!" she headed off into the crowd to find him and drag him back to me. Everybody needs a friend like Krista! Unfortunately, I think Luke is married, so it's probably all for the best that she never did find him again.

Oh, and The Cure was awesome, but you knew that already.

Scenestars got a mention in an article in Billboard last week. You have to be a subscriber to read it on their site, luckily it got picked up by Reuters. You can read it here. Horror of horrors, he posted my age!

Oh, and here's something interesting. I commented on Music (for robots) about the Secret Machines post (which is no longer up) advising everyone to be wary (I actually spelled it weary and was corrected) - and then today this hits the papers.

Oh, and just FYI, for Scenestars, I turn people down all the time for a review, even if it's good music but just not my taste. If it's not something that I would really actually listen to, I don't write about it. This is not my job and I'm not getting paid to do anything, so if I don't love it, what's the point?

I have to say, you'd be hard-pressed to find anything that sucks ass more than waking up on a Saturday afternoon, ordering pizza, pulling down the shades, and getting comfy on the couch, all in preparation for catching up on Ali G., SFU, and Entourage, only to find your HBO OD isn't working. FUCK!

I guess that sounds kind of pampered. I mean, there are little kids out there that don't even have cable, and here I sit complaining that my HBO OD doesn't work. I better meditate and and call my spiritual advisor to cleanse me of my sins.

In other news, I ended up watching some VH1 classic and saw one of the most hystrical '80's videos ever. In Sheena Easton's Almost Over You, Sheena starts out playing piano in her best Jessica McClintock, which is totally acceptable. Then she gets up and walks over to an arcade-style video game and begins to sing to her reflection in the screen as she remembers her former beau. I guess he was attached to the game cause she can only rid herself of the bad memories he left her with by rolling the game to the balcony and throwing it over the ledge. I would have loved to have been in on the conceptual meeting for this masterpiece. "See, Sheena, Defender symbolizes..."

I finally got around to seeing Napoleon Dynamite last night with Patik and Alan. I liked it. It was funny. It had a lot of un-fulfilled potential, something I know a little bit about. It was really more of a character sketch than a movie with a real storyline. If the writer had given Napoleon a real problem to overcome, taken a deeper look into his psyche, or tried making all the characters more three dimensional, this could have been a masterpiece. As it stands, it suffers from Welcome to the Dollhouse syndrome, which is still one of my favorite movies.

The one thing that I still can't figure out is what year it was supposed to be taking place. The music and fashion were all late eighties and early nineties, but one of the characters found his soul mate on the internet. Was this the pre-AOL, ICQ internet? I'm confused. Nice use of stir-up pants though.

I am really looking forward to getting back to my old life of hell-raising and bar-hopping when the project I am working on is over. This "all work and no play" lifestyle is really not working well with my constitution and summer's almost over! The kickoff party for my "Getting Back to Basics" tour of midtown will kick off next Friday night at the Studio 54 party at Melange. I've been asked to be a "Candy Girl." I am not exactly sure what that is, but I think it just means show up and be fabulous. Be there or miss out.

Ultragrrrl also has a really great post breaking down Donnie Darko by all the music used in the film and it's meaning. Is this film gonna play anywhere besides LA and NYC?

When I was 16 I broke down every line in R.E.M.'s Losing My Religion to coincide with my relationship with the boy I lost my virginity to. Then I gave it to him. Then he thought I was crazy.

Yeah, good times, good times.

The wait is finally over. If you've heard the rumors that Paris Hilton is making an album and you've been just dying to hear what her music might sound like, here's your chance.

Sounds like some song that was played over the end credits of an '80's teen flick to me, which means it's gonna like totally go to number one!

Do you know what I miss the most about having a boyfriend? Always having someone to go to shows with. Being able to buy two tickets to any show I want to go to and never having to worry about finding a travel companion. That's the thing that sucks about getting older, people become less into going to shows of bands they don't know, so if you're into anything not on the radio - you're going alone.

BTW, I was in Office Depot today and on the wall they had a list of the names of the managers of all the area stores. The manager for the store in Jackson, TN is named Iva Hickey.

I kid you not.

So, the day before I was supposed to go home to Memphis for my brother's wedding, I went out shopping for a few things. I had to get a wedding present and a new pair of sunglasses, and I had decided to pick up a baseball cap for when my parents woke me up at 8 AM to go to breakfast. I had seen one that I liked at Ground Zero, which has turned into a huge tourist trap ( I live only a couple of blocks away). The one I wanted was a Yankees Cap that was black with black stitching. You know, I wanna root for the Yankees, just subtly.

Anyway, I walked over to Ground Zero and of course, the cap I had seen there was nowhere to be found. I was disappointed and almost bought a different cap, but at the last minute decided against it and hopped on the subway to go uptown for the rest of my shopping.

I spent the whole day scouring the city looking for the perfect gift. By the time I got on the subway to go home, I was exhausted. After a couple of stops a man and two women got on the train and sat down next to me. They were going back and forth about the best way to get to Chinatown. I usually wouldn't have gotten involved, but for some reason I decided to just tell them that they should get off at Canal and walk to Mott. This led to many more questions about Chinatown and I started to regret opening my big mouth. Then we got to the Canal Street stop and I'm like, "This is your stop! Bye!"

They thanked me profusely and even waved to me after they were off the train. I sat back on the seat and went back to staring blankly ahead. When the train was almost to my stop I happened to look down and to my left. They had left one of their bags behind. I felt bad as I picked it up. I probably made them forget it by hurrying them off the train, and I certainly wasn't going to try to track them down in Chinatown. So, I opened it up to see my prize and to my amazement, it was a black yankees cap with black stitching.

Now that's karma!

If you're too busy to write anything new right now, why not just go back through some old posts and do a "Best of?" You have some old stuff that's hilarious that I'm sure a lot of people haven't gone back and read yet.

Good call, my friend, good call.

Since I still can't think of anything new and interesting to write about, here's a funny little story for you:

A few years ago I came home to Memphis to visit my family and made plans to have a girl's night out with some old friends. For some reason, we ended up going to T.J. Mulligans on Quince. If you live in Memphis, no explanation is necessary. If not, let's just say the clientele that patronizes this particular location can sometimes be somewhat questionable.

So, my girlfriends and I are sitting at a round bar table, having drinks and catching up when this guy wearing a dirty t-shirt, backwards baseball cap and very shaggy goatee strolls up to us and starts yappin'. We told him that we were busy catching up and tried to make it obvious that we weren't interested in chatting, but the guy just wouldn't go away. I had forgotten how persistent guys in Memphis could be.

Anyway, this guy won't leave and everyone at my table is too nice to just be blunt, well, except me, of course. So, I looked the guy straight in the eye and said:

Look, bubba, we're fucking busy here. Why don't you go bother somebody else?

His reply?

Howd jew know mah name??

if you have any questions about music (like "Who is this Morrissey fella I keep hearing about? Can you recommend some songs?) please don't be afraid to ask. i won't judge. i'll try to answer your queries as best as i can.

Who is this Morrissey fella? I should really send her an email and find out.

"Show me a well-adjusted, successful man who wants to settle down and have kids and I'm not interested, but find me an alcoholic in his mid-thirties that still thinks his band might make it, and just tell me where I can show up and buy him dinner."

Ok, I'm going to bed now. Carry On.

I was watching the new Beastie Boys' video for Check it Out the other day and I was wondering why the hell Mike D was wearing old man make-up. Then I realized it wasn't make-up - he's just old. Weird. I am a huge fan of the boys, but I wasn't feeling that song at all when I first heard it. Fortunately, I am really digging the old school beats of their latest single Triple Trouble.

Jen turned me on to the Voodoo Music Fest happening in New Orleans in October. Who wants to go? Beasties are playin'.

The bed is a bundle of paradoxes: we go to it with reluctance, yet we quit it with regret; we make up our minds every night to leave it early, but we make up our bodies every morning to keep it late. ~Charles Caleb Colton

So, it's really upsetting that since all I pretty much do is work I have absolutely nothing to say. I am a drone. I sleep, bathe, eat and work. That is all. I try to think of stuff to write about but it hurts my brain and I can't seem to think of anything interesting to say. Seriously, nothing, nada, zilch. Is this what writer's block feels like or am I just too tired to think?

So, here's how you can help. Send me a topic. Ask me a question. Tell me a joke. Forward me a link. Send help now.
