I'm totally bored with myself. But I figure, you come here because you're bored too. So, I posted my pictures from The Beale Street Music Festival. There are a lot of shots of Ben Kweller from when EJ interviewed him. I've been meaning to send EJ the shots and post the pics, so now I've accomplished both.

Ok, I think I'm gonna go take a nap now.

Check out Alex's show before heading to The Buc for hipster hottie Liz's birthday party. It's a celebrity couple costume party, and the invite say you have to wear a costume. Of course, this is just an opportunity for all the haves to feel superior to the have-nots. Should be a blast. See ya there.

Last Saturday night was the big Pho Hoa Binh show with Living Better Electrically and Augustine. You've read about my love for Augustine before, so i won't bore you. If you haven't heard of the other band, Living Better Electrically is this really too good for words psyche group from Jackson, MS. They're not the friendliest, or likely to return your emails, but I enjoyed their show. I tried to contact them for a story I'm writing on Pho Hoa Binh for the Playbook Friday. No reply.

My friends already mostly know that I'm a pretty big dork. Like for instance, I was doing a freelance job a couple of weeks ago down in Tunica, when I was out of contacts and wearing my glasses. I was working in the basement of one of the casinos and they gave us pass cards to get in and out of some of the more secure areas. Obviously since it's a casino there are security cameras everywhere. I was working mostly in the basement, which is made of concrete and is full of mile long corridors.

So, while I was there I pretended like I was Sydney Bristow from Alias and was sneaking around all covert and shiznit. I would always look both ways before I would slide my access card to enter a room, or I would look down when I passed security cameras as to hide my identity. Yeah, I told ya, I'm a dork.

Then today, I went by Pho Hoa Binh to gather a few more pieces of information before I turned my story in for the 2:30 deadline. By chance, E.J. waltzed in shortly after I arrived and kept me company while I finished my story. I then rushed home and, once again, feeling like I was on some super mission, slid the disk that the story was saved on into my desktop, attached it to an email and pressed send just in time. Once again, I saved the world form total destruction. Well, mine, anyways.

Anywho, I posted the pics from the show in my gallery - left hand sidebar.

P.S. The best way to view the galleries is with the slideshow.

I woke up this morning with a headache and a deadline, not the best combination. Then I opened this email and realized I now had something to look forward to in life:

It is with distinct trepidation that I announce my singing debut -- and probably my singing farewell -- at a recital to be held in conjunction with the Muck Sticky Jamboree this Friday at the New Daisy.

In the event you don't know young Muck, he is self-described as a Southern-Fried, Comedy-Rappin', Bluegrass-Hip-Hoppin' Critter. He is a performance artist who champions pot smoking, delves into gospel music, wallows in vulgarity and is said to be adorable by those who know. Since I neither advocate nor embody any of these characteristics, you might well ask why I'm doing an opening song for him this Friday. I've been wondering that myself, although when he asked me to do a number with him (a tune, not a doobie), he said please. He's a well bred young man with good manners who loves his mother and wears pajamas in public. I was honored.

To find out more about him, go to http://www.mucksticky.com.

To find out what I'll be crooning, come to The Muck Sticky Jamboree at the New Daisy Theatre on Beale Street Friday. $7 at the Door, doors open at 7 p.m. Also appearing will be Taco and da mofos, and Mervous Thrifty. Dress is casual. Life is good. Carpe diem.

Jon W. Sparks

Carpe Diem is right.

Hey guess what? I did delete your comments! And this time I banned your IP address! So if you keep on at this point you'll look really needy and pathetic. If you don't like what I have to say, why do you keep coming back? Seems a little weird to me. Here's the deal - I can say whatever I want, it's my site, you however have to be nice to me!! HAHA.

It's good to be the boss.

Wednesday night we had the biggest turnout yet for the weekly at Murphy's. I think everyone is finally turned on to the concept of listening to some new music instead of the same hipster approved gheighties that gets played over and over at the Hi-Tone every week. Not that I don't enjoy going, I do, but - been there - done that. Disco Inferno circa 1992 - are you with me?

I slipped out of my own party for about an hour Wednesday night to go over to the Hi-Tone and check out This is Goodbye. They were excellent. Of all the bands in Memphis, their sound is probably the closest to what I usually listen to. Good stuff. They throw off the hook parties too. Sometimes ;) They're super cool guys. You can stalk them on their Myspace Page.

So, I was excited this morning to be invited to be a speaker at the teen tech camp at the Memphis Library to do a seminar on blogging. I've always thought that I would make a great teacher because ususally it's very easy for me to engage people. Boy, was I wrong.

I was nervous anyway, but imagine standing in front a group of kids for 2 hours and every time you direct a question at them getting nothing back except blank stares. Imagine telling a joke and getting absolutely no response. Not even a fake courtesy laugh. Now I know what it feels like to be Pauly Shore.

So, Jason and the Memphis Feelharmonic took over Beer Bust last Tuesday fo his birthday. I planned on making an appearance and then heading home early for bed. Howevs, since I ended up having so much fun, I stayed way past my bedtime. The next day when I realized I had misplaced my checkcard, I was too embaressed to call Dan to ask if he had it at The Hi-Tone, as I had just called him about misplacing it a few months ago. After not finding it, I finally had it canceled Friday. To my great delight, it was found and returned just a few hours after I cancelled it when I went showed up at the Makeshift show.

The Hustle & Flow premiere was hype. The best part if the evening was when Sims and I walked the red carpet through the mall in Peabody Place up to the theater. I lent my sunglasses to Jason cause he felt under-accessorized and as we walked alone through the crowds of people waiting to get a glimpse of someone famous, they began clapping for us. They obvious mistook my blonde dreadlocked companion wearing enormous black shades for someone of importance. Haw haw.

After the movie we went over to the afterparty at Issac Hayes and got our schmooze on. I ended up seeing Chris Parnell and Jennifer Smith there and got to catch up with them. I've known Chris, originally from Memphis, for about 15 years. I thought it was pretty amusing how we kept getting interrupted most of the evening by people wanting to get their picture made with him. Someone who pretty much hates me even had to break down and interact with me in order to not miss his opportunity for a photo-op. Other people in the industry here in town also acted like they knew me for once. It's amazing the acknowledgement you get while standing next to a pseudo-celebrity (and I only say pseudo because if Chris knew I called him a celebrity he would probably gag.)

I spoke with Craig Brewer for a few minutes and it looks like his next film will be shot in Memphis. That's great news. Anywho - it was fun blah, blah, blah - who cares?

Thursday night I went to see Communique at the Deli. I really like those guys. There were not that many people at the show and I found myself apologizing to them that no one came. Oh, well. I got a CD and a pin. Yay. Afterwards, we went to Dish to listen to J-Sims and Richens spin. We're so unpredictable, I know.

Friday night was the big Makeshift Benefit. The show was great and Makeshift made a nice chunk of change. Everybody wins. there was one major bummer that evening though. I was talking to Brad backstage after he has just lent out his guitar to J.R. We were chatting for about 10 minutes when J.R. came up to us, his girlfirend was with him and crying. He said that as he was walking to his car he had a gun pointed to his head on Tucker near Poplar and Brad's guitar was stolen. People suck.

Augustine rocked the house, as per usual.

Which brings me to Saturday. I spent 5 hours in the car with the parentals yesterday going to Mississippi to attend a family reunion. It was much more painless than I had anticipated. Believe it or not, I don't really like to talk about myself that much. I was a little taken aback when my great-aunt mentioned that she reads this site. (Hi Mary Ann!) Anywho, when I got back to town, I ventured to a party and then to Yosemite Sam's for karaoke, but all in all the night was pretty tame.

This post has become way too long and I am now bored with myself. So, here's just the facts:

There are new blogs linked here.

There are new galleries and many new pics added to some old galleries. I added a lot more pics to the Hustle & Flow Wrap Party gallery via request by my fellow crew members.

I posted some tracks from the new Glass record on Scenestars.

This guy thinks I'm annoying. That's funny. I've been called a lot of things, but that's a first. It's funny how judgmental people are. The one thing I've learned in life is that nothing is ever as it seems. So, I'm gonna give the guy the benefit of the doubt and not assume that he's an asshole.

P.S. I know my grammer sucks and this is a poorly written peice of crap. However, I wrote it in about 8 minutes, cause I gots stuff to do.

My dear friend Brad Troxel's play Sid and the Magic Box is opening tonight at Theater Memphis. Brad is an amazing artist, he set designed and concieved the play. The CA did a story about him in today's Playbook, you can read it here.

Now, although it is always suspicious to me that I get a call to go have drinks with him on the eve of when he has a play opening, I still really think you should check this show out. Because not only is he a brilliant artist, in a Tim Burtonesque sense, he painted this for me:

Yeah, I know, I am a bad blogger, but I'm a damn good friend.

Here's why:

So, I get my invitation to the Hustle & Flow premiere and I know that I promised Sims a while back that I would take him. However, it's on a Wednesday night, when he usually has a DJ gig, so I thought I was homefree to invite a boy that might give me some play. Then I'm informed that J-dread doesn't have a gig afterall. So, thats cool, a promise is a promise, right?

Then today, my high school crush of three years calls me looking for a hook-up to go to the show. THREE YEARS PEOPLE!

And what do I say?

Well, I'll tell you what I didn't say; Hey, you should just come with me, I gots a plus one.

No, I told him I would try to help him out, but I gots a date.

So, needless to say: HAPPY FREAKING BIRTHDAY JASON!

DAMNIT!
