I've always thought of myself as pretty open-minded, but age may be catching up to me. I had a fabulous time last night hanging with friends and seeing a great show, then I went to Hellions house, as she was hosting a few friends. There was a guy there that I ended up having a great conversation with and we ended up chatting all night on the couch. At one point we were alone and he blurted out, 'You're so pretty." or something like that, and leaned in to kiss me.

I had had quite a few drinks during the course of the evening and so, I stopped him, not abruptly, but gently, and said, "You know, you're really great, but I really don't like to make out when I'm inebriated."

I think most people would have just gone for it, I mean he was cute and smart.

But seriously, I think I'm beyond the hook-up (I was just kidding in my earlier post) and now I want someone to ask me out, not just attack me when they're under the influence.

Some of my friends think that I should be out there getting laid as much as possible, and I am of that female age when you start to get the tingle, but I just don't want a one night stand. It's just awkward and weird. Maybe not for most people, but I was in two back to back five year relationships and I just don't know how to do it.

Actually, I don't think I know how to date at all. People seem to just hook-up and have sex and then date. I flirt with everyone, but when people flirt back I always assume they're kidding. I've always been a flirt because I've always had a boyfriend and people knew that so it was safe. I am so out of touch that I never figure out that someone is interested in me until I have totally blown them off.

So, yeah, it's weird. I am very good at relationships, but I'm very bad at reading people's romantic intentions. I am so up front that people hardly ever have to second guess my intentions. Usually, if I am interested in a person, I ask them out. I think that freaks some guys out though, even though they would say that they would love it if a girl asked them out. Maybe I just ask out the wrong guys.

Anyway, this was a total stream of consciencesness post that I will probably delete later.

Happy Thanksgiving. I'm off to the soup kitchen.

Last night was so much fun. We went and saw the Rivercity Tanlines and then went over to the Hi-Tone for hipster night. I haven't done a Tuesday night at the Tone for a hott minute and I'd heard it had been pretty dead. However, in preparation for the holiday, everyone seemed to be there last night. We had a great time and Steve Anne was a great guest DJ.

This week I get to see a bunch of great bands, eat a lot of good food, and I have plenty of money in the bank so I can drink the good vodka.

Now, if I could only manage a hook-up, this could be the best holday ever!

Oh, yeah, peace on earth and blah, blah, blah.

Well, it looks like the break-up might have only been a hiatus. After their supposed split back in June, Tim moved to Knoxville, formed a new group, Raygun, and toured Spain solo, Jeff Hulett performed solo and began playing drums for Matt Miller's new band, Nashon worked on his own project and continued to juice up everyone else's material by guest horning, Brandon carried on in Memphis' favorite cover band, The Pirates, and Brad P. continued to play solo and rock all-star jams on occasion.

Now they're set to play a reunion show at The Hi-tone on December 30th and go on a 10 date tour of Spain at the end of January 2006.

I kind of had a feeling this would happen.

It's so amazing someone can have such an significant effect on your life and never even know it. I found out this week that one of my dearest friends passed away, most likely from the long term effects of drug abuse. Neal Patrick Clark was the first boy who ever made me feel cool. He was a sweet, sensitive person. Before I learned of his death, I hadn't spoken with him for at least 6 years. After his arrest on drug charges and a short period of incarceration, I lost touch with him. I moved to New York, and if I recall correctly, he moved to Missouri to get his act together. To tell you the truth, he hasn't much crossed my mind in the past 5 years. The past few days I've thought about him a lot.

neal.jpgI met Neal when I was a senior in high school. He transferred to Germantown High during the begining of the year. I knew who he was from seeing him around school, but our first official introduction came when my friend Gwen decided to set him up with another transfer student at G-Town, Kyra Roy. Gwen asked me to come along in case those two hit it off, which they did. After our night out playing pool at P&H, we would say hi in the hallways at school, but we didn't hang out again until the spring when Neal, Kyra, and some other kids form school started coming up to Pizza Hut on West St to hang out after school. I worked at The Hut and would sneak them free food. Neal had a friend named Brandon that eventually applied to work there and that cemented the afternoon habit. Then I began dating Brandon and we became a foursome. By the time Prom came around, Neal had moved in with Kyra and her mom, and they had both dropped out of school. Brandon and I went and had our photo made at the dance, and then immediately left to go hang out with Kyra and Neal.

prom.jpgThat summer was the best of my life. The four of us skipped the annual southern rite-of-passage of going to Florida after graduation (mine) and went to see The Cure play in Atlanta instead. We went to clubs and record stores, we went shopping and stayed in a hotel room. We felt like real adults. We had our whole lives planned out. We were going to live next door to each other and our kids were going to grow up together.

Of course, none of that happened. Brandon and I broke up first. Neal and Kyra were right there to console me, and I guess in the break-up I ended up inheriting them. After that, when Kyra was at work, Neal and I spent our afternoons walking around the mall or playing Street Fighter, or just hanging out watching TV. We became very close. But I became even closer to Kyra. Eventually Neal got more and more invloved in drugs, and finally she broke up with him.

And this is where his life was so influential over mine. Kyra and Neal were almost an institution by the time they broke up after being together for two years - from 17 to 19. Hardly anyone saw one out without the other and they definitely shared most of their friends. Kyra felt it was too hard to stay in Memphis and constantly be asked about Neal, or be around the people that she felt were directing him down the wrong path. So she asked me to move to Nashville with her. I was in school at The U of M and really didn't have any want to go to Nashville, but I loved her and I felt like she needed me, so I dropped out and we moved. This was just the first of many times we would follow each other cross-country, over a period of 10 years we lived with each other on and off on five separate occasions.

rachelandkyra.jpg

I often wonder what my life would be like if I had stayed in Memphis. I knew Neal loved Kyra, I knew he did not want to lose her, I know that he wrestled with doing what he knew was right and having fun with his friends, we all do. I know he was crushed when we left town, he even came and visited a couple of times. I remember him once telling me that he knew he wanted to end up with Kyra and marry her one day, but he just wasn't ready to do it yet. Sometimes that second chance we are depending on never actually comes around.

This past week has been quite a memorable one. Every night I've had a great time and I've gotten to hang out with a very diverse group of people. And I got to see almost every band I love in Memphis. I've started a small exercise regimen and I was just discussing with my mother that this is the absolute worst time to begin. This past week was definitely a clue that party season has begun.

As I've already mentioned, Tuesday night I attended the Memphis Film Commission's 20th Anniversary Gala and was able to preview Walk the Line. That night was great but it was only the beginning.

Wednesday I received a text message congratulating me on winning the Memphis Flyer's Reader's Choice Award for Best Blog. You would think that would have included an invitation to the their "Best of" party downtown. You would be wrong. So, Richens and I crashed it, only to find out everyone in town did the same. The food was gone by the time we made it to the party but there were four open bars and music by Halfacre Gunroom and my favorite Harlan T. Bobo. It was fun.

More pictures here.

After the Flyer party a bunch of us caravaned over to the Cory Branan show at The Hitone. Cory had also been at the Flyer party and had also taken advantage of the open bar. Actually, I think half of the audience came form the Flyer party and everybody seemed to be pretty liquored up. Cory recently moved to Hendersonville, so expect fewer local shows.

More pictures here.

Thursday night I began my night as usual with a stop at Dish to hear Richens and Sims spin records and to take advantage of the new drink specials. There were two surprise visits that evening. The first was Mark's older brother Stuart and the second was Alex Blagg. Alex and I caught up on Memphis and the internet and then went over to the Deli to catch Esque.

For some reason The Deli decided to add a third band to the line-up which pushed Esque start time to around 12:20AM. Now I know I'm a late night person, but come on! Who's gonna draw a crowd after midnight on a Thursday? The portion of the show that we did stick around to see was excellent. Those guys keep getting better. Now they just need somewhere to play at a decent hour. Oh, and by the way, as I've said before -the waitresses at The Deli are awesome, the bartenders suck.

More pictures here.

Friday night I had every intention of staying home, but by some happy coincidence I ended up meeting Swen for the opening night at The Vault on Highland (yes, I occasionally leave the parkways!) to see Hedgecreep and The Secret Service play. Now, this is actually the second time in a week that I've seen The Secret Service and every time I see them, I like them more. They know how to put on a rock and roll show, baby. I would highly suggest you check them out the next time they have a show.

More pictures here.

By the next night I was rested from sleeping practically all day. I met Sven and Tony x 10 down at the Onramp Studio and then we carpooled over ot The Buc to check out the CD release party for Eldorado and The Ruckus. A band I hadn't heard before, Stars & Micey, opened and were really great, but Mick & the Ruckus really kicked out the jams when they finally played after midnight. It was a fun show, many parents in attendence. After we rocked out we decided to end the night by caravaning over to Wild Bill's to get our groove on.

More pictures here.

And that was my week. I am very tired and officially broke. This would be a good time to send a donation.

Carry On.

So, thank you to everyone who tried to help me get into the Memphis Film Commission Party last night. It turned out that I was invited, so I didn't have to call in any favors. If you were at the screening, yes, that was my cell phone that went off. I apologize. I'm an idiot.

OR

OR

Now here's how a professional would do it:

Go to Dish at 10 PM and enjoy a bucket of Pony High Lives. Around 11:15 PM take a walk across the street the young Avenue Deli and check out Esque. After the show caravan over to The Buc to get your dance on before closing down the bar and calling a cab to take you home.

Well, those are my plans anyway.

Anybody know how I can get a pass to the Walk the Line premiere at The Paradisio Tuesday night?

Help a sistah out!

UPDATE: Thanks to the coolest sneakiest man in midtown for allowing me to tag along. He knows who he is.

Update #2: Sharon from the film commish just called to let me know that this is actually the 20th Aniversary Party for the Memphis Film Commision - so not really a preview or a premiere.

It's by invitation only, so if you're not on the list - don't bother coming down and trying to sneak in like I've done at other sneak peaks.

So, the peeps have been giving me hell cause I never write about our hijinks anymore. The truth is as this website has become more and more popular, I've felt more leary about writing about my personal life, I really don't want people to know so much about me. It's funny when that moment hits you, when someone you barely know comes up and starts talking to you about something they know about because they read it on this site. It feels weird. I like meeting new people, I just don't know how I feel about people who act like they know me because they read the stupid things I post here.

Here's what went down Halloween Weekend.

I had absolutely no plans for Halloween on the day of. Most of my friends had to work late, and I hadn't hung out with EJ for a spell so I called him up and figured we could party hop together. When I first spoke with him he said that he really didn't want to go to the Craig Brewer party for some reason, but I wanted to at least do a walk-thru. Neither one of us had gotten costumes yet, so we each ventured out to find something to wear.

By ten that evening I was exhausted from shopping and running around all day. I put half of my costume on and got in bed under the covers and waited for EJ to call. After not hearing from him, I called him at 10:30 and he was already at Craig's. I guess he changed his mind. So, I got up, finished putting on my costume and headed over to the annual Brewer Halloween Bash.

The Brewer Party grew quite a bit from last year. It was also the wrap party for Black Snake Moan, the new Brewer film. Plus I think everyone in midtown crashed it.

Interesting Trivia:

Black Snake Moan is also the name of a band - from their website:

So a few weeks back, friends started calling me and asking if I had heard of this movie called "Black Snake Moan." So I take a look and sure enough, Christina Ricci and Samuel L. Jackson are the stars in a story about a nymphomaniac who goes to get healed by a Mississippi bluesman. Well this is too cool to ignore. We contacted Paramount Classics and were routed to the production office in Memphis. We were invited to send in a few copies of "Tension" for possible inclusion in the soundtrack. Its funny, the name Black Snake Moan is the title of an old blues song by a man named Blind Lemon Jefferson. It was about infidelity and was considered a pretty baudy tune at the time, as the "black snake" in the song refers to Brother Lemon's big black...ahem...snake. You can learn more about Brother Jefferson here: Answers.com/Blind Lemon Jefferson. So here we are 75 years or so later and only three entities have used the name since: As rock ‘n roll legend has it Robert Plant was almost going to call led Zeppelin black snake moan, or so I've heard it said. There is of course my beloved Black Snake Moan which has existed in one form or another since August of 1997. And now there's a film; its neat to see and I really hope that we can make a positive contribution.

Yours,
Paige
Black Snake Moan

So, I met up with EJ and then made my way to the open bar. The highlights of the evening were seeing Jason Freeman perform, exchanging 2 sentences with Ruby Wilson and Samuel L. Jackson and of course, the free liquor. After originally not wanting to go, EJ seemed pretty caught up in the event and by midnight I was over it, so I bailed and went to another party to meet up with Hellion and the crew from Stella. Here's EJ's pics from the Brewer event.

Party Tip #1:

Arrive a high profile parties early. There will be shorter lines at the bar. You don't have to stick around just to make sure people see you there - everyone in Memphis could say that they were there and no one would know the difference.

The next party I went to was a straight up kegger at Landon Moore's. I think it might have been a fundraiser as they were charging 5 bucks a cup. It was pretty packed with your garden variety former frat kids. There were lots of girls in wings and hooker attire. It's the one night of the year girls think that they can get away with showing the goods and not being called a whore. Personally, I like to dress scary on Halloween and like a whore for Christmas dinner. Gives the fam something to talk about, ya know?

Party Tip #2

If you're party hopping and you end up at a place and there's food - take a break from drinking and eat it. You don't want to end up that drunken, slurring, annoying storyteller dude. Cause I will seriously just walk away from you while you're in the middle of your epic.

At 2 AM I started getting anxious because I had other stops I needed to make, but as I was trying to leave I was informed that daylight savings was that night and it was actually only 1AM. I sighed and made my way to the keg. Around 2AM I did part ways with Hellion and made my way over to Brad & Amanda Stanfill's for Hipster Halloween. The Rockening was going on at the Hi-tone earlier and there was definitley a lot of spillage from the show. Their place was packed and I enjoyed the looks on people's faces when they realized who was under my costume. The party was fun until the drama.

I was in the middle of talking to Amanda in the kitchen when I saw her eyes light up and she looked passed me and yelled, "You can't do that in my house! You have to leave!"

I turned around to see some dude dipping a key into a little bag of booger sugar. He actually answered her request with a snarky, "Sorry man. I didn't see the no drugs sign on the wall."

So an argument ensued and the next thing I know the party os over and everyone was being asked to leave.

Party Tip #3

Please only do your drugs in the company of your friends and the toilet.

Now it was time to head to Todd Miller's for the wind down. That was followed by an Arrested Development marathon at Hellion's.

Party Tip #4

When attending a music festival, I would not suggest going to eleventy thousand parties the night before.

Pictures are forthcoming.
