Last Thursday night I went to the Deli to check out the Arma Secreta show and when I walked in I was surprised to see Kevin Cubbins, Mark Stuart, John Argroves and a guy I only knew as one of the bartenders from the Hi-tone, Brett, onstage. It seems they have a little band called The Lights and they haven't played a show in over a year. Well, guess what? They were awesome! I was totally out of the loop about these guys, and from what I was told after chatting with them, I might not hear them again for a while because they hardly ever play out and they have no recordings of their songs. What a tragedy!! They were really, really great, so if you hear about them playing - let me know about it!

Arma Secreta was really great too, but you knew that already, right?

1 cup of water

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup butter
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup of sugar
1 tsp salt
1 cup of brown sugar
1 cup lemon juice
4 large eggs
1 cup nuts
2 cups of dried fruit
1 bottle Jose Cuervo Tequila

Sample the Cuervo to check quality. Take a large bowl,
check the Cuervo again, to be sure it is of the
highest quality, then pour one level cup and drink.

Turn on the electric mixer…Beat one cup of butter in
a large fluffy bowl.

Add one teaspoon of sugar…Beat again. At this point
it’s best to make sure the Cuervo is still OK, try
another cup ..just in case.

Turn off the mixerer thingy. Break 2 leggs and add to
the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit, Pick the
frigging fruit off floor… Mix on the turner. If
the fried druit gets stuck in the beaterers just pry
it loose with a drewscriver. Sample the Cuervo to
check for tonsisticity.

Next, sift two cups of salt, or something. Who giveshz
a sheet. Check the Jose Cuervo. Now shift the lemon
juice and strain your nuts. Add one table. Add a
spoon of sugar, or somefink. Whatever you can find.
Greash the oven.

Turn the cake tin 360 degrees and try not to fall
over. Don’t forget to beat off the turner. Finally,
throw the bowl through the window, finish the Cose
Juervo and make sure to put the stove in the
dishwasher.

A few months ago I received an email from a reporter from The Commercial Appeal asking me if I would be willing to do an interview about this website. As I assume most people would be, I was flattered and agreed. After meeting the reporter at Otherlands one morning, getting buzzed up on caffiene, and indulging in talking for an hour about all things me, I promptly forgot about the whole experience and figured she couldn't make the story work.

Then this morning when I checked my email I received several messages from people saying that they read the article, so I went to the CA's website to check it out. After reading it I felt just a little queasy. It's not that any of the facts were off (except that I was an assignment editor, not assistant editor at Channel 5), it's just that everyone has this certain perception of themsleves, often not always accurate but needed for one to make it through the day, and when someone reinterprets that perception, it can certainly be cringe worthy.

My friend Drew summed it up best when he posted this bulletin on Myspace:

Apparently there's a girl named Rachel that buys tampons at 2 in the morning and goes out all the time who writes an online diary, or BLOG if you will.

The eponymous heroine of Rachel's award-winning blog "Rachelandthecity.com," frets constantly about her scene cred, her boyfriend or lack thereof, her overly demanding boss, the fact that she's incompetent to do ordinary things like balance a checkbook, and all the other things that are of vital importance to a liberated woman like herself.

Alright, maybe I stole that from Toonopedia's entry for the comic strip "Cathy," but, my friends, I am not a writer. Besides, I had to change a few things, but it almost read like the article about her in the CA, right?

Now, I realize that it was just a good-natured ribbing, but I got his point. And now I had more misconceptions to clarify: not only do I not rant about bosses or boyfriends, I don't even have a checkbook (who does? Checkcards are where it's at!)(Look ma, I'm being ironic!) And while I immediately wanted to write something here to defend myself, I wasn't quite sure what to say without sounding defensive or saying that anything in the article was not true (although I find it hard to believe that I would ever use the term "floats my boat", but it was early).

Then I received a message from my friend Leilani and it basically said everything I was feeling.

it wasn't that bad.... everyone in the CA just comes off as so out of touch. like, "rachel hangs out at all the "hot spots" and orders "drinks" and finds out what's "going down" with people in her "scene"."

like, "whoa! purple hair! noserings! those kids in midtown are "bitchin'!"

you know what they say, any press is good press, right.
but that cathy comment really hurts. it hurts all women.

Here is an interview I did with Muzzleofbees.com.

E.J. points out that my neighborhood is officially classified as hipster.

This website says I look like a cross between Kate Winslet and Jennifer Connolly. Yeah, whatevs - but I'll take it.

Ok, that's all for now. I'm sure there's an infomercial on I need to see right about now.

It's taken me a week of recovery since The Big Turkey Day 5 Day Extravaganza. I ended up kicking the week off early by seeing Rivercity Tanlines at Murphys and then breaking my own Tuesday Night at the Hi-tone ban. Everyone was out that night and we had quite a fun time. Then Wednesday night, the Deli was packed for the Harlan - Vending Machine - Glass show. It was kind of an eventless show. Good, but hardly memorable. I guess they can't all be crazy. I was supposed to go to Murphy's afterward to hear Will and Darren spin records but I got sidetracked and went to Hellion's.

Thanksgiving night I ended up flodging and staying at home in bed. I'm sure I missed a great show from Esque and Raygun. My bad.

Friday night was the big Lucero show - I'll post those pictures and comments on Scenestars as soon as I get the new gallery up and running coorectly. Look for that to happen in early '06. The show was great even though the Complex ran out of beer half-way through. They must not have had any idea what they were getting into when they booked Lucero.

The Soul Party Saturday night was fantastic and I have never seen the Hi-tone that packed. I ended up sneaking out early because you could hardly move. Early in the evening Pickle and I held court at the bar, so no complaints on not being able to get a drink from me. But then, I know the score. I think I have some pictures somewhere...I can't tell you what I did after the party due to legal reasons.

The rest of the week I laid pretty low and tried to recover. We bowled Tuesday and then did a walk-thru at The Hi-tone, but I was on sodas that night and bailed early for bed.

Thursday night I attended Matthew Melton's art show at MCA and made it just in time for his arrest. That's a long story.

Tonight I am going to try to make it to the Half-Acre Gunroom show at Murphy's and then Scotty and Chris' party at Kudzu's. I have a feeling tonight is going to be a long one.

If you want more info on going out downtown - Meet the downtown version of me. Without the pictures.

On a side note: I know I don't write as much as I used to, but luckily for me - I have several paying writing gigs these days and I try to save all of my witty gems for when it counts.

If you want to know what a bunch of regional folks were listening to this year, check this out. If I asked you for your list and it wasn't used, it might have been because when you wrote your list, you forgot to use this website.

Ok, that's all I got.

Carry on.

P.S. Alex Blagg left me a very informative voicemail to let me know that one of Tim Regan's picks, The Arcade Fire, actually came out in 2004. Duly noted. Check out his very funny post on Blogging Made Simple.
