I just wanted to say a public "Thank You!" to everyone who has lent support so far to the SXSW party. Many people are helping and don't want any publicity from it, so I will respect their wishes and not out them, but I just wanted them to know that it means a lot to me and the bands. All I want out of any of this is to show the level of talent we have here in Memphis. I have been to a lot of festivals and events nationwide and I think any of the bands playing the showcase could compete nationally.

And if you're not included this time around, stand by!! Hopefully this will be a stepping stone opportunity that will lead to future events where we can get more people and bands involved!!

When I quit my job it was a real leap of faith - but I finally feel like I made the right decision!

I presented my idea for a SXSW showcase today to The Memphis Music Commission. It went remarklably well considering I had no idea what I was doing. They also signed me up to help them revamp their websote, so I'm really excited about that. It's funny how many things don't happen because people are scared to try something new. Everything that I have done in music and writing has all been based on the idea, "Well, why can't I?"

It just goes to show that if you put yourself out there and follow through, anything can happen.

When you wish upon a star....ok, I'll stop now.

Last night was Brandon's birthday dinner and we got to lay on the floor at Do and eat stawberry sushi and drink saki before we went to Sam Colvin's to climb to the top of her tree house. We are all twelve-year-olds trapped in thirty-year-old bodies.

Tonight:

Friday night I went by my parents house to raid the refridgerator and watch Lost on their DVR and somehow I ended up getting conned into going to eat with my mother and seeing a movie. I wanted to see Pan's Labyrinth, she wanted to see Because I Said You So. She paid for my shrimp, so I let her win.

So, the movie is about a mother trying to find her daughter a husband.

The entire movie my mother did that annoying thing where when something that she thinks we both can relate to something that happens she'll turn her head and watch me for my reaction.
God I hate that.

So, of course, when we leave she asks me when I plan on settling down. Like it's a choice.

Anyway, I needed to get out of there so bad that I went ahead and took a six pack over to the Decleyre House and stood in the corner alone and watched the bands. Man, am I old. I barely knew one person in the place. The best part of the evening happened when I went to the bathroom and there was a line and the 20 year old dude in front looked at me and goes, "Are you Rachelandthecity?"

"Why, yes, I am, and that means I get to go next!" And then I swooped in front of him as the next person came out of the bathroom.

I went to see Jump Back Jake, but by the time I realized they weren't going to play until 1 AM I was over it an went back to midtown to Drue's house. Paul Taylor was there hanging out and I couldn't talk anyone into going out, but of course, it just turned into a party in Drue's kitchen as more and more people called to see what we were doing. I text messaged with the rock star all night, thinking, maybe he would come hang out - but he never showed up.

Saturday night I got to go see an incredibly memorable show at Otherlands with Blair Combest. He's pretty much the hands down best singer songwriter in town, if you ask me. He was having a little trouble getting into it on stage, so he just unplugged and came and sat at the table in front of mine and did an accoustic show. It was very touching and very funny.

Afterwards we went downtown to some swank party that J-dread was dj'ing. It was in this awesome loft down the street from The Arcade.

Now here's the difference between rich people and not-so-rich people. The party was in a beautiful place, with an awesome dj, tons of food, and endless wine and a keg. In midtown, that place would have been wiped clean before the party was over. I can't count hoaw many times I've been at a midtown house party at 3 AM when everyone starts scavenging for a drink. Instead, around 12:30 most of the people at this party were headed to Raiford's. Sorry, hate to play the cred card, but seriously, Raiford's was cool when I went there in '96, it was free and you got to watch the crackwhores dance with each other. Now soccer mom's and lawyers pay 10 bucks to go in and get down to some Prince - "It's Saturday night, we are gonna parteeeeeeeeeee!"

Oh, yeah, there were at least three dudes there with their "dick in a box." I wonder if they felt as lame as a woman feels when another girl shows up in the same outfit.

Anyway, we helped Jason pack up his stuff and headed to Dish, well, the rest of the crew headed to Dish, I headed to the Deli.

Anyway - blah blah blah yada yada yada...

Oh wait, the other really funny thing that happened was I ended up talking to this drug dealer about whether or not people should spank they kids. He was defending it really passionately. Then he said, "My daddy use to whoop my ass when I did wrong, and look at me, I turned out fine!"

I have never in my life wanted so badly for their to be a camera that I could turn and look at with a bewildered look on my face as in the background the audience heard - whua wha....

whatever.

Since nobody reads this thing anymore, I am going to start using names again. That was another annoying thing that made me not want to write, when I spent an hour telling a hilarious story only to receive an email from someone begging me to take it down because I used their name. Well, people, that's lame - so get over it. I'm not gonna talk about anybody's incriminating activities - so don't worry about it.

So anyway, I am throwing a party at SXSW on Sunday. It's a showcase, closing party at Flamingo Cantina on 6th Street. Here are the bands:

Snowglobe
Giant Bear
Jamie Randolph and the Bloodsuckers
Antenna Shoes
Jump Back Jake
Holly Cole and Blair Combest.

Now I need to raise a couple of thousand dollars to make this party happen - to get us there, rent the venue and PA and promote the show - I won't really make anything from the show - but I am hoping by doing the party two things will happen.

1. Some really talented musicians will get a chance to be recognized.
2. Memphis will set up a yearly presence other than the garage/post-garage/goner/contaminated scene - which is all great stuff, but these bands are great too.

So, if you are reading this and have ever wanted to contribute something - now is the time. Hit the PAYPAL and help a sistah out - If it's a significant amount we'll even put you on the flyer as a sponsor. Purty please?

In the past couple of days I've wondered how I got myself into this huge project that I am not sure if I can pull off or not, and the funny thng is, I can tell you exactly why. So here it is...

I've been blogging for a long time. I'm an old schooler. In terms of music blogs, when I started, there weren't more than 5 or 6 that anyone was really aware of. I've mentored and befriended many, many bloggers over the past few years. I've given advice, given links, helped them figure out how and where to set up shop, and mainly just corresponded with them cause they liked what I was doing. This happened with a lot of really, really popular bloggers that are out there today, in all different genres from personal, celebrity, and music blogging, from local to national. I was the big dog in the game for quite a while. But just as in almost anything new, there are the people who start things and then there are poeple that come along, innovate, take what was new, swirl it around and ride the wave of popularity to fame and fortune. That's just the way it is, I've discussed it with many people and I ain't hurt. That a lot of blogs that started as my fans have gone on to become super huge is fine with me, to tell you the truth, by the time music blogs got super huge last year, I was running out of steam and people could tell. Oh, I would get reinvogorated now and again, but I knew that I was still on the scene because I was old school and the token girl - which was fine by me...

So, when I was in LA last Novemeber with Chris from Gorilla Vs. Bear, Justin from Aquarium Drunkard, and Craig from My Old Kentucky Blog - I kind of understood why they didn't even glance my way as they sat talking about the SXSW party they should do. I mean sure, I've done special favors for each of them, but they don't think that I can really bring anything to the table - so they didn't ask me to be a part of their party.

The point being is I really like and respect those guys, but being totally left out, and while I was sitting right there, well, it hurt my feelings! And when my feelings get hurt, I don't cower in the corner, I take action. I throw my own goddamn SXSW party!

So, anyway, I'm looking for sponsors. Can you please help?

EDITOR'S NOTE: Well, it seems people do still read this site. Let me clarify. Again - I am not mad at those guys, nor was I curled in the fetal position worrying why they don't like me - I just was like, "Yo, I'm standing right here!" But I know I'm not in the big leagues and can not generate the turnout those guys can. They are all great guys that I consider my friends -I am just being honest about how I felt in the moment which may or may not have been justified. I'm a girl, I could have just been on my period!

Here's their party - Everyone should totally go!

That's right! Gorilla vs Bear, Chromewaves, Largehearted Boy, My Old KY Blog, Rock Insider and You Ain't No Picasso are all teaming up to throw the best party at SXSW this year!

Ok - first of all - I am a dumbass...

and a fuck-up.

That's pretty clear. But if you would like to know the real reason I haven't posted anything worthwhile, well, one of the real reasons among many, it's becasue my internet at home hasn't worked in about 3 months. Why? Well, after calling Comcast at least three times, spending hours talking to techs and missing three tech appointments at my house - one I forgot about, one I slept through and one they never showed, I finally got down on my hand and knees tonight and took everything apart and replaced the ethernet cable. Voila!

I actually had a feeling that it would be something really simple, but just like the closet you're gonna get around to cleaning out, or the laundry that just keeps piling up, or how you keep telling yourself you really, really need to back-up everything on your PC and never quite find the time to so it, well, like I said, it's been three months.

And for all five of you still hangin' around here with the dustbunnies, you might find it hard to believe, but I find it very hard to blog from anywhere except this desktop computer, even though I also have two laptops and a pc at work. I don't know why, I'm just weird.

Anyway, if you're still around and interested, you are in for quite a treat as I plan to transcribe as accurately as possible my upcoming descent into the gutter.

I quit my day job. I think I just got insurance yesterday. Ha!

But, as you might have also noticed, I certainly wasn't writing anything while I was working it. I was drowning in a sea of oblivian. I'm not hatin' on 9 to 5'ers - it just is not the life for me. I can not function before 11, I just can't, even when I went to bed by 10 PM a lot of nights. Just ask Joel and Dan at the Hitone - they have barely seen me in the last three months, same with my other favorite watering holes. I've been good, I've tried, I did the best I could.

So, here I sit jobless - like totally.

My main goal is to get back on top of my websites and start actually writing them again. Then there's this SXSW party I've gotten myself involved with. I'll talk about that more later. That's too overwhelming to talk about right now. Ow. My head hurts even thinking about it.

Anyway - that's my story. I tried to lead a civilian life, but if that's all there is - then beam me up Scotty!

More to come.
