Di Anne Price, well known singer and pianist, will be playing at the Westin Memphis Beale Street. Her music style is very diverse, with a heavy jazz and blues emphasis. She plays on every Monday from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the hotel lobby bar.

She once asked me to sit down next to her at Ciello's...She asked me questions about my life and then sang songs based on the stories I told her - it was one of the best nights of my life!!!

Hey Rachel!

Just wanted to let you know the new Starbucks downtown is open. It is located on Third Street , next to The Westin Memphis Beale Street, and directly across from the FedExForum. This is downtown Memphis’ second Starbucks, and the only one with street access.

Hours of operation are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. You can expect all the usual Starbucks services: Hot and cold beverages, edible treats, wireless internet access and music. Enjoy your Iced Late, or Caramel Macchiato inside or out on the patio. Whether you indulge alone, or with friends, the new downtown Starbucks is a great place to sit back, relax and enjoy the essence of downtown Memphis .

So go buy a frappicino and tell 'em I sent ya!

I had almost forgotten about the summer movie series at The Orpheum! So, I was excited when this showed up in my inbox last week...

I would have posted the invite - but the email said:

Of course, when we got there they were handing them out at the door - so be on the lookout, unless you turn down free drinks!!

The Westin was nice, but not too fancy. After having dinner at The Majestic and dropping by The Feelharmonic Party at The New Daisy, we finished off the night with a nightcap at The Hitone with Miss Holly Cole...

Memphis%20Pops.jpgSince the hot and dusty autumn of 1915, when W.C. Handy's "Memphis Blues (Talkin' 'bout dem Boss Crump Blues)" hit the top of Circus Tent and Minstrel Show magazine's most requested list of shoutouts for the whole year, Memphis popular music has been defining and setting the course for American music history. The D.W. Griffith scopitone of Handy's hit song (most played in 1915, according to Penny Arcade) coupled with the Handy Orchestra's L&N sponsored barn-storming tour of union lodges and wedding halls catapulted the song from dance hall favorite to political campaign success, forever cementing Memphis' place at the top of the pop music world. Almost one hundred years later, Memphis continues to create and disseminate the finest pop music in the entertainment industry.

On July 28, 2007, Memphis will celebrate the continued fluoridation of indigenous pop music with the 1st Annual Memphis Pops Fest. Bands performing will be the cream of the crop of Memphis' past, present, and future pop stars. Beginning at 6:00 p.m. Saturday at the Hi Tone Cafe 1913 Poplar Ave. in Memphis with the public debut of the Ardent Records 40 Years Story documentary by musicologist Larry Nager, the bands will include Vending Machine, Antenna Shoes, the Carbonas, the Everyday Parade (featuring members of '80s stalwart pop phenoms The Crime), Viva L'American Death Ray plus the always popular special guests!

Last week I was invited down to Tunica to Grand Casino to check out the new stage version of the game show The Price is Right. It just happened to be the week that Bob Barker, beloved host of the television show, was stepping down after 35 years. I hadn't been to the casinos in a few years but thought, "What the hell?"

I dragged a couple of good natured friends down to Mississip with me and promised them that if nothing else, we could probably score a few drinks!

We quizzed each other on the price of soup and powdered milk as we traveled over the border into gambling country, we were sure that at least one of us would end up on stage and win a car...

Anyway, I expected it to be really cheesy, and it was, but it was still a lot of fun. Maybe I just have a dirty mind but I almost fell out of my chair when the host (David Ruprecht of Supermarket Sweep fame) asked how much a row of ladies would bid for "a lovely new pearl necklace!" or when he kept telling this one lady how close to "the hole" she was while playing 'Hole in Two."

The most fun, of course, was watching the excerpts of the old The Price is Right TV show. I grew up watching that show and the clips were HILARIOUS.

They called down new contestants for every aspect of the show, rather than give people several chances to bid their way on to the stage, which was kind of cool since after every game you got the excitement of possibly going up on stage.

My only complaint wold be that until the final Showcase Showdown, the prizes were a little lame - but the final guy won a car, a big screen television, and a trip to Vegas!!! Not too shabby.

This guy won...

If you're already headed down to the casino, I can suggest this as a really fun distraction.

Muddy Waters: Can't Be Satisfied

A documentary spotlighting legendary bluesman Muddy Waters, co-directed and co-produced by Robert Gordon. It traces Waters's evolution from a sharecropping acoustic folk singer to a sharp-dressing, Chicago-based leader of one of the greatest electric bands ever, along with reminiscences and accolades from friends, family, and fellow musicians like Keith Richards, Bonnie Raitt, and Buddy Guy.

Menu tastings provided by Central BBQ

Flow: Living In The Stream Of Music
The film, produced and directed by Jim Gabour, follows famed composer/trumpeter Terence Blanchard as he performs on four continents with his band of young, engaging musicians. Filmed over an entire year, Flow documents the mentoring and growth of what many critics are calling one of the premiere jazz bands of our time, as they prepare and perform before sold-out audiences in Paris, Tokyo, Osaka, and Cape Town, South Africa. Part travelogue, part concert, and part engaging documentation of what it means to commit to a life in music, Flow aims at both entertaining and enlightening its audience.
Menu tastings provided by Spindini

Before The Music Dies
Before The Music Dies tells the story of American music at this precarious moment. Filmmakers Andrew Shapter and Joel Rasmussen traveled the country, hoping to understand why mainstream music seems so packaged and repetitive, and whether corporations really had the power to silence musical innovation. The answers they found on this journey–ultimately, the promise that the future holds — are what makes Before The Music Dies both riveting and exhilarating. At the heart of the documentary are interviews with musicians, industry insiders, music critics and fans that reveal how music has reached this moment of truth. The film features interviews and performances by the Dave Matthews Band, Erykah Badu, Elvis Costello and Branford Marsalis.
Menu tastings provided by Square Foods
