Los Angeles, CA – Theresa Kereakes , the veteran punk rock photographer behind the Punk Turns 30 blog and brand unveils a new photo exhibit, UNGUARDED MOMENTS: Backstage and Beyond, showcasing more photos from the Golden Age of Punk Rock.

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

Debbie Harry & Blondie, Chrissie Hynde, Billy Idol, Joan Jett, the Ramones, Sex Pistols, Belinda Carlisle & the Go Gos are all internationally known popular music icons. Some of them are in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame; they all have gold and platinum records. BUT, in 1977, they were all gritty punk rockers hanging out in night club backrooms with their friends. They wore vintage or home-made clothes and did their own hair and make-up. They partied with each other and punk rockers from other cities, serving as inadvertent good-will ambassadors for the new music. Those "before-they-were-stars" parties, backstage rooms and unguarded moments are presented here, in the UNGUARDED MOMENTS: BACKSTAGE AND BEYOND touring exhibit.

TOUR ITINERARY

The UNGUARDED MOMENTS tour kicks off at the Motel Art Show – One Night Stand at the Ole Miss Motel in Oxford, MS on October 25. In keeping with the Motel theme, Theresa's selection will showcase several never-before-seen images of The Cramps 1978 line-up photographed at the long-gone World Famous Tropicana Motel of West Hollywood, CA, one which touring punk rockers called "Home" while traveling through Los Angeles. The next stop is on November 1 in Memphis, TN and the Goner Records store where a Punk Turns 30 / Unguarded Moments collection befitting the holiday that falls on that date will be shown: Punk Rock Day of the Dead. The Day of the Dead will feature popular Punk Turns 30 images of… dead punk rockers, from The Ramones to Stiv Bators, Johnny Thunders and Darby Crash to the lesser known but equally as photogenic personalities such as Lance Loud, Black Randy, Bruce Gary (The Knack) and Rik L Rik. A weekend in Atlanta, GA is slated for November 16/17.

As they always have been, Punk Turns 30 exhibits are accompanied by live music of the garage / punk variety.

The tour resumes after the Thanksgiving holiday with more dates and venues to be announced shortly.

ABOUT the PHOTOGRAPHER

Theresa Kereakes has been taking pictures for most of her life.

She was a student of English Literature at UCLA when punk rock exploded and she took pictures in stride, not knowing at the time that many of her subjects would become famous, infamous or collectible.

Her punk rock photos have been published in Creem, Rolling Stone, Trouser Press, Playboy, Circus, Rock Scene, Music Life (Japan), various fanzines and trade papers world wide.

Covers for records such as Stiv Bators "Disconnected" solo album, The Germs "Forming," The Pandoras "Hot Generation," The Ventures "Surfing & Spying" all made in Los Angeles for indie labels bear her photo credit. In recent years, both her vintage and custom work has appeared on compilations and new releases by artists in the punk and garage genres, including Rhino Records Box Set "Children of Nuggets," The Dirtbombs, Mumps, King Khan & BBQ Show, Mary Weiss, Alarm Clocks and Bamboo Kids.

As of October 2007, three books on punk rock containing Theresa's contributions are on bookstore shelves

* PUNK 365 (Abrams) by Holly George Warren includes 3 photos from the Punk Turns 30 Collection
* BOMP! (Ammo Books) by Suzy Shaw & Mick Farren includes dozens of Punk Turns 30 photos, many of which were published by Bomp in the 70s and 80s as record covers, inner sleeves, press photos or in their magazine.
* The Official Punk Rock Book of Lists (Hal Leonard) by Amy Wallace & Handsome Dick Manitoba includes a list contribution from Theresa from her experience working at the Whisky a Go Go during the Los Angeles punk rock heyday.

Finally, while Theresa is on tour in the United States, her work is traveling to Europe.

To quote another press release:

I received this email today:

late night
friday october 26
someone vandalized
my friend aimer's restaurant
casa blanca
in cooper young
(the last time this happened was in the wake of 9/11
when the mural at his previous restaurant morocco cafe was defaced)

despite boards in place of windows
aimer remains open for business
greeting customers with a smile on his face
though tears in his eyes

he is thankful for his health
his family
& friends
and though being the target of a hate crime is painful
he does not wish to complain
he considers this a blessing
as the once hungry find it in their hearts to do for those less fortunate
aimer holds love in his heart for those who have done this
he says it is not for him to judge them

i urge everyone
including local businesses in the neighborhood and community
to rally around this kind man in support

sincerely

Tomorrow night this::::::

Friday, October 26th 6:00pm until 12:00

Friday October 26th South Main is going to be busy. It's Trolley tour... AND the Memphis River Arts Festival will be sprawling across the neighborhood with art vendors, food vendors, and Music (Blind Mississippi Morris plays Friday at 6:00).

Because we didn't think South Main would be busy enough to properly commemorate our 30th birthdays we rented out the back room at Earnestine and Hazel's, invited a few bands to help us celebrate. We're setting up a wine and liquor bar and E&H will have beer and soul burgers.

10/12: Spider Baby (1968)
In a dilapidated rural mansion, the last generation of the degenerate, inbred Merrye family lives with the inherited curse of a disease that causes them to mentally regress from the age of 10 or so on as they physically develop. The family chauffeur looks out for them and covers up their indiscretions. Trouble comes when greedy distant relatives and their lawyer arrive to dispossess the family of its home. w/ Lon Chaney Jr. and a very young Sid Haig(House 1000 Corpses / Devil's Rejects). Directed by Jack Hill

10/13: Evil Dead 2 (1987)
It's fuc*in Evil Dead 2. Not much plot description needed here I wouldn't think. A young man named Ash(Bruce Campbell) takes his girlfriend Linda to a secluded cabin, and plays back a professor's tape recorded recitation of passages from the Book of the Dead. The spell calls up an evil force from the woods which turns Linda into a monstrous Deadite, and threatens to do the same to Ash. Directed by Sam Raimi

10/19: Suspiria (1977)
A newcomer to a fancy ballet academy gradually comes to realize that the staff of the school are actually a coven of witches bent on chaos and destruction. Directed beautifully by Dario Argento(Opera, Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Deep Red Hatchet Murders)

10/20: The Thing ('82)
Scientists in the Antarctic are confronted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of the people that it kills. Easily one of the best film remakes ever. w/ Kurt Russell. Directed by John Carpenter

10/26: Return of the Living Dead (1985)
When a bumbling pair of employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to re-animate as they go on a rampage through Louisville, Kentucky seeking their favorite food...brains! Incredibly fun pseudo continuation of the "Dead" series. Directed by Dan O'Bannon(writer of "Alien", "Dark Star")

10/27: Halloween('78)
15 years ago(from 1978), 6 year old Michael Myers brutally killed his older sister. The silent child was incarcerated in the Smith's Grove Sanitarium under the care of psychiatrist Sam Loomis. The town of Haddonfield had slowly began to forget the tragic crime, until Loomis returned to the town to warn of Myers escape from Smith's Grove. THE ORIGINAL AND ONLY "HALLOWEEN". EXCEPT NO SUBSTITUTES. Directed by John Carpenter
