Trump is out here bragging about his big DC crime crackdown like its some kind of policy win, while 79% of the people who actually live in DC think he’s full of shit. Thats not a mandate – that’s a warning sign. But instead of listening, he’s doubling down on the optics, trying to pass off a federal occupation as law enforcement. The numbers arent even subtle.
Nearly 8 in 10 residents oppose the federal takeover. Sixty-nine percent are strongly opposed. Only 17% support it. Two-thirds think it wont even reduce crime long term. Yet the White House is out there waving around press releases about arrest totals and gun seizures like body counts in Vietnam – a meaningless scoreboard designed to distract from the fact that nothing systemic is changing. This whole thing is politically toxic and logistically unsustainable.
Trump has thrown 800 National Guard troops and hundreds of federal agents into the city – treating DC like Baghdad while the actual residents are telling him to get lost. Those agents arent even supposed to be there. Their real jobs are things like stopping cartels, tracking terrorists, or investigating cybercrime.
The Guard isn’t trained for policing neighborhoods either. Not to mention, crime was already dropping before Trump rolled in with his federal circus. Violent crime hit a 30-year low in 2024. Homicides down 32%, robberies down 39%, carjackings cut in half. The’se are Justice Department stats from before Trump started his little surge.
Hes taking credit for a trend that was already in motion. When 79% of the people you’re protecting think you’re making things worse, that’s not public safety – that’s authoritarianism. DC voters already hate him. He only got 6% of the vote there and his approval rating in the district is at 15%. This isn’t policy – its punishment.Residents arent buying it either.
They say crime is best reduced with more jobs, stricter gun laws, and better local policing. Instead, they’re getting immigration sweeps and soldiers with weapons they’re not trained to use.Trump has no actual solutions for urban crime because solutions require tackling poverty, drugs, and economic inequality.
Instead, he’s using crime as a pretext to expand federal control. Hes even said this is a test run for other cities. Thats the scary part – he’s going to take credit for DCs naturally declining crime rate, then use it to justify federalizing police in other cities that are already seeing declines.Once this surge ends, DC will be right back where it started – except now itll be more dependent on federal troops and less invested in building its own long-term solutions.
Crime reduction through occupation isn’t crime reduction at all. Its just authoritarian rule with a police badge slapped on top.
