On January 20 – his first day back in office – Trump signed an executive order suspending the entire U.S. Refugee Admissions Program. Every single legitimate refugee pathway – gone. People who had been approved and were literally about to board planes? Sorry – America's closed. Afghans who worked with our military and face Taliban execution? Not our problem anymore. Families fleeing civil war in Sudan? Tough luck.
But then – miraculously – Trump discovered one group of "refugees" he could get behind: white South African farmers – or Afrikaners as they call themselves. You know – the descendants of the colonizers who implemented apartheid.
The whole thing is built on a mountain of bullshit. Trump claims these Afrikaners face "racial discrimination" and are victims of "government-sponsored race-based discrimination – including racially discriminatory property confiscation." He's referring to South Africa's new Expropriation Act – which does nothing of the sort.
What does this law actually do? It simply updates an apartheid-era expropriation law from 1975 to align with South Africa's constitution. It allows the government to take land for public purposes – just like eminent domain in the U.S. And while it does include provisions for "nil compensation" in very specific cases – like abandoned property or land not being used for development – there's nothing in it targeting white farmers.
As Thomas Karberg – a legal expert – put it: "The act clearly indicates that it is not intended to be used to legitimize wide-scale 'land grabs' or confiscation of land." But why let facts get in the way of a good white grievance narrative?
Meanwhile – let's talk about who's really suffering. While Trump was busy rolling out the welcome mat for these 49 Afrikaners – his administration has:
– Halted resettlement for refugees from Congo – Afghanistan – Venezuela – Syria – Myanmar – Somalia – and other countries facing actual humanitarian crises
– Cancelled flights for people who had already been approved to come to America
– Slashed funding to resettlement agencies – forcing them to lay off hundreds of staff who help refugees find housing and jobs
– Fought court orders to process the 12,000 refugees who were already approved before the suspension
The double standard is breathtaking. These Afrikaners didn't even flee their country – they were specifically recruited and fast-tracked through an expedited process that skipped normal vetting procedures. As one refugee official noted – the speed at which they were processed is "remarkable and unprecedented" and required "a lot of bending rules."
And what persecution are they fleeing exactly?
White South Africans still dominate the economy – holding more than 60% of top corporate jobs despite being only 7% of the population. Black South Africans are almost five times more likely to be unemployed than whites.
But sure – let's pretend these are the people who need America's protection – not the Rohingya Muslims facing actual genocide or Syrians whose cities have been bombed to rubble.
This isn't refugee policy – it's racial politics at its most cynical. Trump is sending a clear message about which "refugees" matter to him – and it has nothing to do with who's actually in danger.
The real victims aren't these comfortable South African families being greeted by Trump officials at Dulles Airport. The real victims are the thousands of legitimate refugees – people who have endured unimaginable suffering – who now have nowhere to go because America has closed its doors to everyone except those who look like Trump's base.
