I’ve written about this several times before – which Ill link to in the comments – but lets break down the Republican lie that Democrats are trying to shut down the federal government to give illegal aliens free healthcare.
Theyre saying this because they think you’re stupid.
Vice President JD Vance, Speaker Mike Johnson, and the official Senate Republicans account are all parroting the same line. Democrats want to give your tax dollars to illegal immigrants for healthcare. Its designed to make you angry without making you think. And if you actually look at what Democrats are proposing, the whole thing falls apart.
Democrats want two things in this budget fight. Just two things. They want to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies that expire at the end of this year – subsidies that help regular Americans afford health insurance. And they want to roll back Medicaid cuts that Republicans shoved through in Trump’s July tax cut bill.
Thats it. There’s nothing in there about changing who gets healthcare based on immigration status. Nothing.
Because heres what Republicans arent mentioning: unauthorized immigrants are already barred by federal law from getting government healthcare. They can’t buy insurance on the Obamacare exchanges. They can’t get ACA subsidies. They can’t enroll in Medicaid, Medicare, or the Childrens Health Insurance Program.
This isn’t new. This isn’t changing. This is how its always been.
Senator Patty Murray said it plainly: Undocumented immigrants are not eligible to enroll in federally funded health coverage under existing law or Democrats funding proposal – but millions of American citizens will see their health care premiums double next year if Republicans keep refusing to act.
Your premiums. Doubled. Thats what this fight is actually about.
So wheres this lie coming from? Republicans are playing a word game and hoping you won’t notice.
Theyre deliberately confusing lawfully present immigrants with unauthorized immigrants. Lawfully present means people here legally – refugees, asylum recipients, DACA recipients. The Republican tax law stripped healthcare subsidies from some of the’se legal immigrants. Democrats want to restore it.
But Republicans are calling them illegal immigrants anyway because they’re counting on you not knowing the difference.
The numbers game gets even worse. Three Republican committee chairmen claimed that 1.2 million illegal immigrants or noncitizens would lose subsidies under their law. The Congressional Budget Office – which is nonpartisan – did estimate that 1.2 million people would lose coverage. But the CBO never said they were illegal or unauthorized.
Republicans just added that part themselves. They saw a number and slapped the word illegal on it.
Some states do use their own money to provide healthcare for unauthorized immigrants. More than a dozen states cover low-income kids regardless of immigration status, and seven states cover low-income adults – mostly pregnant women. But those are state-funded programs using state money. The current federal funding fight doesn’t affect them at all.
The only federal money that goes toward unauthorized immigrants healthcare is emergency Medicaid – which reimburses hospitals when they’re legally required to provide emergency care. Republicans already cut those reimbursements in July. Democrats arent trying to expand it.
Providing emergency care for everyone actually protects American citizens. Can you imagine what it would be like if you showed up to a hospital during a heart attack and they would not admit you until you could prove that you’re a citizen?
So, yeah – the only FREE healthcare an undocumented immigrant receives is if they show up at a hospitals with a broken leg, suffering a stroke, or some other EMERGENCY – and the reason why the federal government reimburses hospitals is so that they don’t lose money from something they are legally required to do.
Its just basic decency. Republicans cut healthcare for millions of Americans to pay for tax cuts. Now Democrats want to restore that healthcare. And Republicans are trying to make you think restoring healthcare for Americans is somehow about unauthorized immigration.
Its rage bait. Democrats want to protect Americans healthcare subsidies doesn’t get you angry. But Democrats want to give YOUR tax dollars to illegal aliens does.
Without the’se subsidies, millions of Americans will see their health insurance premiums skyrocket. But instead of having an honest conversation about that, Republicans would rather lie about whats actually in the proposal. Theyre not just betting you won’t fact-check them. Theyre betting you don’t care enough to look.
When politicians lie this blatantly about something this important, they’re insulting your intelligence. They think youll just believe whatever makes you angry without asking questions.
But you’re smarter than that – right?
